Open Data for Urban Trees

City tree inventories contain rich information about urban forests, but differences in how they are collected and maintained make it difficult to compare trees across cities. I compiled and standardized municipal inventories containing 4.7 million trees across 30 U.S. and Canadian cities, harmonizing species names, locations, inventory years, and diameter measurements.

Using 2023 satellite imagery, we then identified approximately 3.9 million trees as likely still present. The resulting open dataset provides a common foundation for studying urban forests across cities and is publicly available alongside the code used to build it.
